NEWARK-John Carney admits that getting ready to take over as Delaware’s lone voice in the U.S. House of Representatives is a daunting task. “Someone characterized it as drinking out of a fire hose, and I think that’s a pretty apt description,” Representative-elect Carney said in an interview at DFM News on Monday.

Carney, a Democrat, defeated Republican Glen Urquhart in Delaware’s U.S. House race November 2. Since then, the representative-elect has been busy preparing to assume the seat of outgoing Representative Mike Castle (R). The preparations included spending some time in Washington, D.C., earlier this month at an orientation for new members of Congress.

As Delaware Republicans ponder their setbacks in the 2010 election, few may be more qualified to speak about those setbacks, and the lessons learned, than Tom Kovach, Rick Carroll, and Chris Weeks. All three were Republican candidates for the state House of Representatives—Kovach an incumbent—and all three lost. They spent long days and chilly nights knocking on [...]

The November 2nd election was just the beginning of a period of transition for New Castle County government.

The victory by former County Executive Chris Coons in Delaware’s U.S. Senate race meant that County Council President Paul Clark was elevated to County Executive November 15th.

Eight days later, Clark delivered his first address as County Executive to members of Council at a meeting of the Executive Committee. He also delivered a message to New Castle County citizens: “be assured that the transition has and will continue to be seamless with no interruption to important County services.”

Race to the Top has forced schools, school districts and even counties in Delaware to race to the discussion table.

Thanks to the federal grant that will bring about $100 million to the First State over the next four years, many entities that rarely combined resources are now talking regularly and working together – whether it’s districts sharing the cost of professional development or teachers coming together for a shared planning period.

Delaware Democrats turn to a current member of New Castle County Council for their candidate in the upcoming special election for County Council president. 9th District Councilman Timothy Sheldon topped civic activist Bill Dunn at a nominating convention held by county Democrats Monday night at William Penn High School in New Castle.

DOVER – A piece of unfinished business will likely be on the agenda early when the 146th General Assembly gets to work this January.

Last year, an effort to revise Delaware’s drug laws failed to reach the finish line. As DFM News reported in June, HB 443, which would streamline Delaware’s drug laws and bring them in line with other criminal laws in the state, passed the House of Representatives. The bill failed to get through the Senate, never reaching the floor for debate and a vote. The bill is likely to remain the same as the one introduced last year . (more…)

There’s still no date set for the special election to fill the vacancy of New Castle County Council president, but there is now one candidate. The New Castle County Republican Committee named former 6th District State Representative Tom Kovach as its nominee for the post Wednesday.

The special election for New Castle County Council president is necessary after former council president Paul Clark took over as New Castle County executive earlier this week. Clark replaced fellow Democrat Chris Coons, who resigned as county executive to become Delaware’s junior U.S. Senator following his election victory over Republican Christine O’Donnell on November 2. The Democratic nominee for New Castle County Council president will be determined at a special convention this Monday night, November 22nd at William Penn High School in New Castle.(more…)

Delaware is one of just a few states in the nation where Democratic candidates for state legislatures enjoyed success in the November 2nd election.

In fact, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, Democrats gained seats in just five legislative chambers – the State Senates of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts and Hawaii, and the Delaware State House. Democrats picked up two seats in the chamber and will hold a 26-15 majority over the Republicans.

Why was the First State able to withstand the Republican wave of support on Election Day? (more…)
