Velda Jones-Potter (current)

  • Democrat
  • Appointed by Governor Jack Markell in 2009 to finish the remainder of his term
  • Worked for DuPont for 17 years and as an executive vice president of MBNA
  • Lost to Chip Flowers in Democratic primary for state treasurer in September 2010

Jack Markell (1999–2009)

  • Democrat
  • In senior management at Nextel, Comcast before election as treasurer in 1998
  • Launched financial literacy initiatives and Delaware Bank at School Program
  • Served two and a half terms as treasurer before being elected governor in 2008

Janet C. Rzewnicki (1983–1999)

  • Republican
  • Served four four-year terms as state treasurer
  • Lost to Mike Castle in 1992 race for U.S House
  • Lost to Tom Carper in 1996 race for governor
  • Joined DuPont Direct Financial Holdings in 2001

Tom Carper (1977–1983)

  • Democrat
  • Served three two-year terms as treasurer (term became four years in 1983)
  • Elected to U.S House in 1982, served five terms (1983–1993)
  • Elected governor in 1992, served two terms (1993–2001)
  • Elected to U.S. Senate in 2000, now in second term

Mary D. Jornlin (1973–1977)

  • Republican
  • Served two two-year terms as state treasurer
  • First woman elected New Castle County executive, served one term (1976–1981)

Emily Womach (1971-1973)

  • Democrat
  • Lost to Sherman W. Tribbett in primary race for governor in 1972
  • Served as first president of Abigail Adams National Bancorp
