Delaware’s high-stakes race for the U.S. Senate has absorbed most of the attention this election cycle, but that doesn’t mean it’s the most competitive statewide race. That distinction may fall to the race for Delaware state treasurer, pitting Republican Colin Bonini against Democrat Chip Flowers.

- State treasurer candidates Colin Bonini (R) and Chip Flowers discuss the issues with DFM News’ Nancy Karibjanian
The only polling done on the treasurer’s race was released in early October by Fairleigh Dickinson University. In FDU’s PublicMind Poll, Bonini and Flowers were dead even at 38 percent with 21 percent undecided. Flowers, a Wilmington attorney, drew his strongest support from New Castle County, where he led Bonini by 41 to 34 percent. Bonini, a state senator from Dover, led in Kent and Sussex counties combined by 44 to 33 percent.
The winner will replace incumbent Velda Jones-Potter, who lost to Flowers in the September Democratic primary, and will fill an office that historically has been the launching pad for successful and unsuccessful bids for higher office. (See DELAWARE IN FACT: Recent state treasurers.)
DFM Vice President Nancy Karibjanian sat down with Bonini and Flowers to discuss their competing visions for the treasurer’s office, how they would implement their plans, and their political aspirations.
