Delaware joined the rest of the nation in paying tribute to veterans of the armed services as part of Friday’s observance of Veterans Day. The state honored its veterans service to the state and the country Friday morning in a ceremony at the War Memorial Plaza near the Delaware Memorial Bridge.
“(Veterans and current members of the military) have chosen a different path, one that is all about service to others,” said Governor Jack Markell (D). “This service is so great, their choices so humbling that it really does seem that speeches or proclamations or tributes pale in comparison.”
Friday’s Veterans Day event was organized by Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs and the Marine Corps League, Department of Delaware.
The most recent U.S. Census Bureau figures show the First State is home to just over 78 thousand veterans, or roughly 8 percent of the state population. Senator Chris Coons (D-Delaware) says the service and sacrifice of those veterans and others around the nation provide a model for the rest of the country.
“The example you set for young Americans, the challenge you present to elected Americans, we need more than ever,” said Coons. “The example of your quiet, selfless, disciplined service should haunt those of us who have not yet lived up to the promises of our nation’s founding. Thank you for your service.”
