Haiti Family Initiative fundraising efforts

The Haiti Family Initiative plans to conduct a variety of fundraisers throughout the year to help finance a third summer of activity in Jacmel, Haiti.

Two special fundraising campaigns will soon be launched on the group’s website, said Lynn Shapira, HFI president and co-founder.

A sample of papier-mâché artwork from a Haitian arts cooperative HFI will sell to raise funds.

A scholarship campaign will seek contributions of $150, enough to pay for a year of expenses, including books and uniforms, at a private school in Haiti. HFI will post photos of children, with background information about them, on its website, and will offer the opportunity to choose a child to sponsor for a year of schooling, Shapira said.

The website will also become home to an online boutique featuring papier-mâché artwork created by women at a fledgling arts cooperative in Jacmel. The colorful items include vases, bowls, masks and wall hangings, Shapira said.

HFI is also working to identify area gift shops interested in selling the items, she said.
