Full text of Governor Jack Markell’s weekly message:

Getting people to work. Making our public schools stronger. Protecting the safety and health of our state’s residents.

And keeping our commitment to our state’s long-term financial health and fiscal discipline.

Those were a few of the priorities that guided the first half of this legislative session… one that began amid the snow and storms of January and ended in the early morning of July 1st. In between, with the support of Delawareans from across our great state, the legislature took some strong steps forward, passing laws to improve public safety and strengthen public health.

… Bills that expanded personal freedoms and enhanced our competitive position and efforts that improve economic opportunities for the future.

We came together around a budget and a bond bill that invests in our future – that recognizes the critical role education plays in economic development – and makes clear the benefits of kids arriving for their first day of school ready to succeed.

We have a budget that cuts taxes responsibly, offers to help employers looking to hire and to rebuild the foundations of our state’s economy – areas like small business that have been hardest hit by our national recession – businesses critical to hundreds of thousands of Delaware families’ economic future.

It’s a budget that recognizes that while the economy is showing some signs of life, we need to remain fully committed to working together, keeping focused together, encouraging growth, helping employers create new opportunities to put people to work while we keep building Delaware’s future now.

Because it’s that approach – that shared commitment Delawareans have made to fight alongside each other to make progress around our shared priorities instead of fighting AGAINST each other in the far fewer areas where we disagree, that’s helped make some progress where it matters most and has helped keep Delaware moving forward.
