Full text of Governor Jack Markell’s weekly message:

Professional football players know what it means to get hit hard. To get knocked down – flattened – and have to get up, again and again, because their careers depend on it.

A lot of people – particularly some young people – have known that feeling the last few years, although it’s been the national economy – not a 300 pound lineman – that’s been delivering those hits.

And yet, they get up- because they know that giving up is never an option.

They know that, while football measures progress by the yard, life moves forward when you push forward, day by day, hour by hour.   And progress is so much easier, when you’re not trying to make it alone.

For 32 years, Jobs for America ’s Graduates – or JAG – has been there to help more 800,000 young people – to get themselves up when knocked down, get through school, acquire job skills or training, enter the job market or pursue higher education.

Tough economic times have made JAG ’s work more important than ever.

That ’s why it was so inspiring this week, right here in Delaware, that people who know what it means to get hit, get up, and get going have signed on to the team.

The NFL Alumni Association agreed to become a national partner and support young people through the work of Jobs for America ’s Graduates and locally, Jobs for Delaware Graduates.

To give our kids a shot at success -to help get those kids working.

And, in doing so, ensure our economic future and their economic future is more sound.

The NFL Alums and business leaders from around the country made the announcement here in Delaware because of our commitment to JAG and its principles  of hard work, commitment, focus and the belief in young people.

Former player Vince Papale said he got to be an Eagle because he never gave up and because, even though the odds seemed impossible, he had people that believed in him.

It ’s a message we need to join JAG and the NFL Alums in sending to our young people– we believe in you, we’re focused on creating opportunities for you to work hard and succeed and we know, that day by day, yard by yard, we’re pushing hard to keep you and Delaware moving forward.
