Full text of Governor Jack Markell’s weekly message:

Our jobs plan – Building Delaware’s Future Now – is about putting people to work to improve our state’s future. It’s about creating greater economic opportunity, expanding education and helping Delaware make a stronger case to employers looking for the best place to expand or locate …

Making clear to them that the First State should be their First Choice to put people to work.

Building Delaware’s Future Now is also about being fiscally responsible with the limited resources our state has available – taking steps now to protect our state’s financial future.

While we’re wrestling with these core issues as a state, an inspiring group of Delawareans – including a number of our great state employees – have come together to help people tackle these critical issues of work, education and financial responsibility in their own lives.

The new effort brings together the United Way, major banks, effective and engaged non-profits – dozens of groups who are volunteering their time, resources and talents to create a new group called Stand By Me D.E.,  –  the Delaware Financial Empowerment partnership.

Achieving financial literacy helps open a new chapter in a person’s economic outlook: protection from financial predators, improving fiscal accountability and creating new opportunities.

For any Delawarean who wants to improve his or her financial outlook; get a handle on a budget or look for ways to save, StandByMeDE offers free one-on-one financial coaching.

The first sessions will be held at the Hudson State Service Center in Newark, where the work was unveiled this week.  Later, these efforts will spread to public agencies, businesses, and non-profit organizations around the state – so free help will not be that far away.

Stand By Me DE can help with applications for college and financial aid, or referrals to other non-profit and state agencies for specific help.

It will help people work with credit unions and help people borrow, save, and conduct financial transactions without worries about predatory practices lurking in the fine print.

It’s about what’s best in Delaware – people coming together to make a real difference for their friends and neighbors – to stand by one another.  StandByMeDe.org is one more way we keep working  together to keep Delaware moving forward.
